The community put its resilience to the test during Category 5 Hurricane Ian in September 2022. Remarkably, Babcock Ranch never lost power during this unprecedented storm, a testament to the effectiveness of its design. This has attracted massive attention, including a spotlight feature on a prominent television news program, leading to a surge in real estate interest.

Real estate expert Benjamin Board from The Ferrari Team highlights a nearly 30% increase in new home sales this quarter alone, signaling a robust market recovery following a sluggish 2025. Board and partner Christy Ferrari both reside in Babcock Ranch and understand firsthand the appeal: the safety and peace of mind it offers during hurricanes.

The allure of Babcock Ranch extends beyond hurricane safety. The community features over 150 miles of trails, parks, and various town centers that encourage an active lifestyle with walkable streets tailored for biking and golf carts. Ferrari commented on the distinct advantage of living in Babcock Ranch during storms, stating, “We have the peace of mind of never losing power.” The experience after Hurricane Ian corroborated this, with Board observing mostly minimal landscape damage and no flooding in residential areas.

After Ian, many residents remained in their homes, confident they wouldn’t need to evacuate. The region boasts a remarkable resilience sector GDP growth of 41.9% over the last five years, according to The Florida Council of 100, indicating a significant focus on sustainability practices. Beginning in October, Babcock Ranch will kick off an inaugural cohort lasting eight weeks, designed for early-stage companies specializing in extreme weather resilience.

Lucienne Pears, vice president of economic and business development for Kitson & Partners, emphasized that the goal is for Babcock Ranch to share its successful model with broader communities. Discussions will touch upon how the construction quality can significantly influence insurance costs, aiming for homes that are both resilient and economically viable.

Taking a close look at construction techniques and innovative materials, Pears recognizes the need for ongoing evolution in the face of climate change. “We’ve solved many of today’s concerns,” she notes, “but there’s always the question of how to address tomorrow’s challenges.”
